Is that Free Vehicle History Report Really Free ? |
|
| Most of the time, the commonly advertised Free Vehicle History
Report is only a free record check that shows you the number of records they have
on file. Then you are lured in to seeing what the records are all about. Usually the cost
is $15 for a one time report, or unlimited reports for 60 days for about $25. So
it's not really a Free Vehicle History Report. The cost of a VHR is insignificant compared
the to price of a nice used car. I know this from my own personal experience. In
2002 I purchased a Ford Bronco from a Ford Dealer with an odometer problem. The truck also
had an accident history. Unfortunately, I did not run my report until I started having
problems. To make a long story short, the dealer took the truck back, but I was out some
significant repair cost.
You can however, get a Free Vehicle History Report from many places. Many times the seller will run a report for you for Free. Once Carmax let me view one on screen for a vehicle I was interested in. Most dealerships and car lots will do this free of charge. Private sellers will do this many times. Think about it, If you were selling a car that you knew was clean, wouldn't you spend the $15 if it meant a sell. Some on-line loan institutions will give you a Free Vehicle History Report for the car you are about to finance. For some of them its a must. If you were an lender, would you want to loan money on a problem vehicle ? You can check the ads on this page for vehicle history reports. Most will tell you how many records are on file.
